U.S. Office of Personnel Management. OPM’s list is for Federal employees. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, for most Federal employees the preceding Friday is treated as the holiday (5 U.S.C. 6103(b)); when it falls on a Sunday, the following Monday (Executive Order 11582, section 3(a)). Private employers and states choose their own days. The December 31, 2027 line comes from the 2028 tab of the same OPM page.

How do I calculate my work hours per week?

Subtract the start time from the end time, take off any unpaid break, and multiply by the days you work. From 9:00 to 17:00 with a 30 minute unpaid break the day is 7.5 hours, and five days make 37.5 hours a week. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats the shift as running past midnight.

How many working hours are there in a year?

Count the days you work in the calendar year, remove the holidays that fall on those days, and multiply by your hours per day. Both 2026 and 2027 have 261 weekdays. At 8 hours a day that is 2,088 hours with no holidays; with the 11 US federal holidays of 2026 it is 250 days and 2,000 hours; with the 12 of 2027 it is 249 days and 1,992 hours. England and Wales has 8 bank holidays in 2026, which leaves 253 days and 2,024 hours.

Which holidays does the calculator take off?

Only the list you choose: US federal holidays from OPM, or the bank holidays of England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland from GOV.UK. Each list is already moved off weekends by its publisher, and a holiday that lands on a day you do not work costs nothing. Whether you are paid for the day is up to your employer.

Does a bank or federal holiday mean a paid day off?

Not by itself. GOV.UK says your employer does not have to give you paid leave on bank or public holidays, and the US Department of Labor says the Fair Labor Standards Act does not require payment for time not worked such as federal or other holidays. Your contract or policy decides. The calculator shows when the day falls; it does not decide whether you are paid.

How do I count paid time off in the year?

Type the number of vacation or sick days you plan to use. The calculator takes them off the working days of the year, multiplied by your hours per day, and shows the result as hours for the year and as an average per month.

Questions about work hours

Why not just use 2,080 hours?

Forty hours a week times 52 weeks is 2,080, a handy round figure. A calendar year has 261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours at 8 hours a day, and holidays and time off bring the real figure down. The calculator uses the real calendar.

Is the lunch break paid?

It depends on your employer. The calculator takes off the minutes you type, so enter 0 if your break is paid.

Can I use it for part-time or four-day weeks?

Yes. Tick the days you work and set the daily hours. Every week must follow the same pattern; rotating shifts are not modeled.

Does it work for 2028?

No. The holiday lists are loaded for 2026 and 2027 only, and the year switch offers those two years.

Where do the holiday dates come from?

From the OPM federal holidays page and the GOV.UK bank holidays page, copied with the day we opened them. The source and the date are shown under the result.

Do state or local holidays count?

They are not on the lists, so they are not taken off. Choose no holidays and subtract them with the paid time off field if your employer gives them.
